Theatripod is a challenge to create multivoice podfics in the style of theatre productions, with a director, auditions, callbacks, rehearsals, and a final recorded performance with minimal editing (ideally in front of a live audience)!

Why are you doing this? )

How can I learn more about this round's projects? )

How do I audition? )

I'm worried that auditioning will be scary/humiliating/damaging for me. )

What are callbacks and what will happen if I am scheduled for one? )

If I join the cast for one of the projects, what happens next? )

What will the schedule be? )

How will I make sure that all group members have a good experience? )

This project was created for Theatipod 2015. We got together once a week to rehearse and at the end performed the project live for an audience. This was an amazing experience. Due to technical issues, the live performance was not recorded. However, we recorded a back up previously that has good sound quality. Also, serendipitously we recorded the tech rehearsal which we ran with the other Theatripod group and you can hear them as the audience.

Thanks to Bessyboo for the amazing Theatripod graphic used in the cover.

Thanks to Paraka for hosting!!

Directorial Style/Expectations:
A little on me as a director so we all know what we’re getting into with this : I only have two big requirements. The first is that attendance is mandatory. I expect everyone to show up and be on time for every rehearsal. Treat this like any theater group you would sign up for. The second big requirement is that you come to rehearsals prepared. This means reading the fic beforehand, taking notes, and practicing between rehearsals. During rehearsals I expect I will be a relaxed director - running through scenes before giving notes to help you get into character or figure out why a line is how it is and how it should be read. I can be relaxed because my podficcers will be prepared :D

My goal for this project is for it to end with a live performance for an audience. If that is unfeasible, we will do a “live” performance but just for recording. Either option will be posted on AO3 and other such spaces. Please note both the length and rating; this would mean being able to perform an hour long (approx.) podfic all in one go; as well as performing several explicit scenes for a live audience.

A note on the fic itself. PLEASE read the entire thing before auditioning. It is exactly what the summary says and the guys get pretty crude at times so please be aware and willing to work with this.

I’m super SUPER excited about this project!! And I’m super excited to have you involved! I can’t wait to hear your audition! There are only two parts in this production so if you don’t get cast it is NOT because you aren’t awesome! It’s because I’m looking for people who blend together with the type of chemistry I need for these characters. You are super awesome just for auditioning!!!

Audition Excerpts:
Submit to: [theatripod@gmail.com]

Please email these to me raw files. We will be performing this live so I need to hear what you sound like without any filters or noise removal. Sound quality is not going to bar you from being cast, I am sure if there are sound issues we can work together to find something that works for everyone. All auditions I receive will be treated with thoughtfulness and respect, and I will give you positive feedback about what works well in your performance—whether you are cast or not!
There is only one excerpt for auditioning. Feel free to read both parts (regardless of whether you are auditioning for both. Just let me know which part you’re auditioning for) or get a friend to read opposite you or even just leave pauses for the other part. Regardless of part please read the bit in black (the computer notification).

Directorial Style/Expectations:

I expect you to be on time for rehearsal, and to come to every rehearsal unless you have a serious emergency. Please treat this like you would any other theater production you would be cast in. I also expect you to rehearse your parts and study your character outside of rehearsal. During rehearsal I am a pretty relaxed director. I like to run through a scene, then give notes and work with you to help you get into character more, and dissect why we are doing a line a certain way and if anything needs to change.

The end goal for this is to have a "live" performance where we perform the entire fic in one sitting without editing. If it is possible I would like to have a show where we perform for a "live" internet audience.

There is a warning on this fic for a brief description of graphic war wounds, so if you are auditioning for the role of Watson, please read that section before you audition to make sure you are okay with reading it.

There are three parts for this production and if you don't get chosen for callbacks or get cast, it is NOT because you are not talented. I am choosing people based on the chemistry they have together and how well they will work with me. All auditions I receive will be treated with thoughtfulness and respect, and I will give you positive feedback about what works well in your performance—whether you are cast or not! Thanks so much for auditions and I can't wait to hear your audition!

For the audition, only the highlighted parts need to be read. I have left some non-highlighted narration in some other excerpts so you can see the dialogue tags. Additionally, you only need to read the parts that are highlighted in the color of the character(s) you are auditioning for. Feel free to read both parts, read only your part and leave pauses, or have a friend read opposite you. Just tell me which character you are auditioning for. As a heads up, you might get a callback for a character you didn't audition for because I think you would be a good fit. If you don't wish to read for that character, just let me know.

Audition Excerpts

Watson
Finally, inevitably, they collapse in the snow. Holmes is panting angrily, as though his body's weakness is a personal affront. Harsh, furious bursts of air. They crystallize into a fog of tiny ice-daggers, and it swirls explosively as Holmes grits his teeth and levers himself to his feet.

Mycroft
"Sherlock." someone says, on an exhaled breath
"I see you've been getting into trouble again," From his tone of voice he might be greeting an acquaintance at a garden party, but there is a tinge of grey in his face.

Mycroft
Mycroft only smiles passively. "Yes, Sherlock inherited all the energy in the family, and I'm afraid he's been neck-deep in trouble ever since. How is he, doctor?"

Watson blinks himself awake with an effort. He has met Mycroft only a handful of times, and he's never actually heard the man ask a question that he doesn't already know the answer to. Now there is something sharp and searching in his eyes in spite of his detached tone and lax expression. "Not well," he says, grimly. "But out of danger, for the present."

"I can of course gather that the injury was received from a sharp object and caused a good deal of blood loss, but--"

"Moriarty tortured him," Watson says baldly. "I'm not precisely sure how and I don't expect he'll ever tell me, but when I found him he had an industrial hook in his shoulder."

There is a pause. "I see," Mycroft says, with his usual air of bland disinterest, but a muscle twitches in the corner of his eye and Watson likes him better than he ever has.

Holmes and Watson
You must understand," Holmes says, brusque and rapid as gunfire. "If I could have prevented - it was already too late."

"I don't--"

"He'd have killed you out of spite," Holmes says fiercely. "I could have told him I'd never interfere with him again and it wouldn't have made a whit of difference. I assure you, Watson, if--"

"Holmes." Watson has to raise his voice to cut the other man off. "You needn't justify anything; I don't blame you. You're not responsible for the actions of a madman."

Holmes and Watson
"Perhaps if you left off your infernal nursemaiding and allowed a man to rest--"

"For God's sake, Holmes. I've never seen anyone so stubborn."

"I can only conclude that you have an unnatural fear of reflective surfaces."

"Funny," Watson growls. "If I am, it's fortunate for you. Sometimes I believe my stubbornness is the only thing keeping you alive."

"Indeed."

Four months after the casting call came out, a cast of nine (plus one director) voiced fifteen characters (plus one narrator) (who themselves play eleven World of Warcraft characters) over two months of rehearsals which produced eight and a half hours of raw files which became an hour and sixteen minutes of edited podfic (after the services of one beta) and forty-two minutes of outtakes all of which are being offered in two different formats with custom art from one artist who also did one amazing ensemble piece that features one orc, two tauren, three elves, one troll, three undead, one golbin, and one cat. With a kitten thrown in for good luck.

This is the final weekend to send in auditions, and while all parts in Do You Wanna Date My Avatar, a better fate than wisdom, DILF, and The Things You Hide are still accepting auditions until the end of Sunday (midnight anywhere in the world), there are a few parts that more auditions are especially needed for.

They are:

DILF—Derek Hale, Sheriff Stilinski, Sharon, and Diana.

The Things You Hide—Sherlock Holmes.

If you know anybody who you think would be good for these parts, please let them know! Reading and sending in an audition takes very little time, and it will help ensure that our productions are cast with groups that gel together and are a good match for the director's visions.

[personal profile] klb
All of our casting calls are posted! Here they are in one easy-to-peruse list:

1. Supernatural Affairs, X-Men First Class, directed by helens78. Written by helens78, 2000 words, 6 roles. Rehearsals Sat or Sun from 11am to 1pm PST. — Postponed due to RL!

2. Do You Wanna Date My Avatar, Teen Wolf, directed by kalakirya. Written by christycorr, 9000 words, 6 roles. Rehearsals Saturdays between 9am and 1pm MST.

3. a better fate than wisdom, Fall Out Boy, directed by melusina. Written by girlpearl, 3000 words, 4 roles. Rehearsals Sat or Sun sometime between 11am and 6pm CST.

4. DILF, Teen Wolf, directed by comedicdrama. Written by twentysomething, 30000 words, 7 roles. Rehearsals evenings sometime between 5pm and 10pm EST.

5. The Things You Hide *fluff edition*, BBC Sherlock, directed by vulgar_shudder. Written by verity burns, 5000 words, 2 roles. Rehearsals Sat evenings sometime between 6pm to 12am PST.

6. You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison, Bandom, directed by dancinbutterfly. Written by dancinbutterfly, 50000 words, 9 roles. Rehearsal times open based on actor availability. — Director chose to cast early. Please focus auditions on our other projects!

And a note on auditioning: Auditioning only takes 5–10 minutes, and the success of this project is gong to be depend largely on the number of auditions, so if you are interested at all in the possibility of participating in a theatrical, directed, multi-voice podfic, please consider auditioning. I know that it can be intimidating thinking about the possibility of auditioning and *not* getting cast, but please keep in mind that

a) You can increase your chances by auditioning for as many productions as you want (you will only be cast in one, so by auditioning for more you can up your chances without risking overburdening yourself with a ton of projects).

b) Whether you are cast or not is going to be based entirely on the director's vision for the production and on what actors they think will work well off each other. It has zero to do with any judgment about your skill. If you were not cast, it would not be about being not good enough or being judged not good enough. This is just about whether what you have to offer happens to tie in with what the director is looking for and with what the other actors who audition have to offer. And you might be the perfect person for a role based on those things. So if you'd enjoy being cast, please take 10 minutes and throw your hat in the ring, and then trust the directors to do what's best for their vision of the production, without it being in any way a reflection on who is and is not "good" in some objective way! (which, as you know, in podfic fandom, is not really a concept we put a lot of weight on in the first place :D).

HAPPY AUDITIONING!
dancinbutterfly: (MCR - Hero!Bob - No Bullshit)
[personal profile] dancinbutterfly
Hi, I’m Rachael [personal profile] dancinbutterfly and I’ll be looking for with 9 actors to be the POV characters (at a later date I will also be looking for at least 1 actor who would be willing to play the minor characters although more will be welcome)on a 50,000 word multi-voice Bandom podfic. Dont get intimidated! The number of people and the narrative distribution will allow for private time to work on your own and really spread out the word count.

What's the story?
You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison by me, [personal profile] dancinbutterfly, and is written third person limited omniscient point of view of 9 people inside a maximum security prison, along with other less central characters. The story is on LJ and here

What's the author's summary of the story? (characters will get a strike-through as assigned)
The Decaydence: that’s what the inmates call the D Block of Janick State Correctional Facility. The Decaydance is full of your garden variety mobsters, gangsters, pimps, drug dealers, crazy cult leaders, murderers, and other dangerous offenders. What people appear to be isn’t necessarily who they are but all that matters is reputation, how they stay alive and where they fall on the Decaydance food chain.

What's your summary of the story?
I AM the author so I’m going to leave it at that and talk about the tricky bits instead. This is a shifting POV story that I wrote a couple years ago and it deals with some heavy material - its set in prison so there’s violence, references to non-con, on screen consent issues, prison drug culture and other prison machinations. For me this is a story about how people come together and connect with each other in the most bizarre, horrible and beautiful ways. The main romantic pairings of this fic are Gerard/Brian, Pete/Patrick, and Bob/Ryan. I planned the first two and the third one snuck up on me and managed to rearrange the entire structure of the story which proved my own point. I also chose this one because there is no single narrator (all of the 9 main players narrator their own sections) and shifts it leaves room for us to wiggle around - if you the actor have issues with content, word order, etc, you can actually TALK TO ME about it and we can work on it.

How in the world is this going to work?
Yeah about that… )

How do I audition?
Excellent question! )

Where can I submit my audition?
here(ish) )

Lets talk about warnings )

(crossposting on behalf of [livejournal.com profile] vulgar_shudder)

Hello, I am [livejournal.com profile] vulgar_shudder (Hanna), and I'll be working on a two-scene 5000 word script (alot is directions in that tho) `The Things you Hide` fluff edition by verity burns.

Details about the script:

The Things You Hide is nearly 5000-words long, but a lot of that is directions heavy. It is between the two main characters over two scenes.

Premise of the Script: Sherlock comes home drunk from a case, John looks after him. Things get said by a drunk Sherlock, the next morning they have to talk about it. It's all very cute and fluffy.

Rehearsal Schedule:
I am like GMT+9, so I would like to hold once weekly rehearsals Saturday Evening sometime between Pacific 6PM-12PM (that will be Sunday morning with me). If Europeans are cast, then I am flexible to do rehearsals around GMT Sat Evening time.

List of Characters:

Sherlock Holmes (a drunk and loose lipped consulting detective)
John Watson (his doctor flat mate)

How to audtion:
I am still working on the script, so for the meantime just read an excerpt from the original fic. You will only be auditioned on the character's lines.

Please state whether you are auditioning for John or Sherlock or Both.

If you are auditioning for Sherlock, please give a sample of your DRUNK sherlock, and SOBER sherlock.

Record up to a min of dialogue.

When you've recorded your audition file, please send it, or a link to it, to vulgar.shudder@gmail.com. I will email you once I've received it; if I don't email you back within 24 hours, please PM me on livejournal or comment on this post to ask if I got your audition file!

Any other information:

There is no narrator, I am a radio play fan so we can discuss ideas for sound effects to use.

The script is open to improvisation.

All accents welcome, there is no need to do a British accent if you are not comfortable with it. My decision will be based on who I think will fit together well.

Rehearsals will take place on Skype (my skype username is hbelza) I will record rehearsals with MP3 Skype Recorder and will have copies available for all performers after we've recorded, in case we brainstorm ideas or you'd like to play back the rehearsals to see what your interactions with the other performer sounded like.

I'll say two hour rehearsal sessions, which should give time for multiple run troughs, but may not be required.

For final recording, I'd ideally like each person to record eir own part individually, but I will have a Skype backup as a last-case option.

About the Story and Script:

DILF by twentysomething is a Teen Wolf fic focusing on the slash pairing of Derek and Stiles. Due to the length of it (30k+), much of the heavy slash is being edited out, so the rating doesn't creep past a PG-13 (for language).

Summary by the author: "Today is Scott's first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified."

Rehearsal Schedule:

Rehearsals would typically be 1-2 hours long. The script is broken up into scenes, so not everyone is needed at each read-through. I am aiming for evenings (5pm EST - 10pm EST), any night of the week, so please let me know which days work best for you.

Cast of Characters:

(More detailed character bios are located in the audition scripts.)

Derek Hale (Large role)
Stiles Stilinski (Large role)
Jackson Hale (Medium role)
Scott Hale (Medium role)
Sheriff John Stilinski (Small role)
Sharon (Small role)
Diana (Small role)

Extra voices are needed as well, but do not require an audition. Please see the audition info document for more info.

Audition Information:

Please see this document.

Other Information:

The script is still being worked on. I'm adapting as fast as my fingers will let me. Because of this, suggestions are welcomed. If you are cast and feel something isn't working, or have ideas on how to make something better, please do share.

In regards to accents, a neutral American accent is preferred, but won't necessarily exclude anyone.

However, mic quality is taken into consideration. If it sounds like you're talking into a tin can, my ears will not be happy. If you are limited to using an internal microphone, please consider upgrading. USB mics are typically effective and cost-efficient. (Even mics from Rock Band will suffice most of the time.)

Any questions, let me know! My contact information is in the Google Doc linked above.

About the Script:

a better fate than wisdom by [personal profile] girlpearl (Bandom/Fall Out Boy, Pete/Patrick, general audiences, 3,000 words). When a very insistent groupie won’t leave Patrick alone, Patrick decides to pretend that he and Pete are dating. That wouldn’t be a problem if Patrick didn’t have a crush on Pete or if he could remember that Pete’s only pretending.

Rehearsal Schedule:

I’d like to rehearse 1-2 hours a week, on either Saturdays or Sundays at some point between 11:00 Central time and 6:00 Central time. Please let me know which day and times are best for you.

Cast of Characters:

Narrator (large role, in all scenes) - Will read all narration (the story is written in 3rd person past tense, from Patrick Stump’s pov)
Derek Hale (small role, 2 scenes) - A crossover character from the TV show Teen Wolf. Derek is a late teens/early 20’s werewolf and (in this story) an ardent Patrick Stump fan.
Patrick Stump (large role, in all scenes) - Early 20’s, lead singer for the band Fall Out Boy.
Pete Wentz (large role, in all scenes) - Mid 20’s, bassist for the band Fall Out Boy

Audition Instructions: behind the cut )

Other Information:

Any accents are welcome!

Rehearsals will be held over Skype and recorded and made available to performers. The final performance will be recorded on Skype.

Hi, I'm kalakirya (Jess), and I'll be working with people on a 9000 word multi-voice Teen Wolf podfic!

What's the story?

It's Do You Wanna Date My Avatar by [personal profile] christycorr [personal profile] christycorr, and is written half in narrative format, and half in World of Warcraft chat format. The story is here on AO3, and my complicatedly color-coded preliminary script is here. I'm still fussing with it – the narrator's going to get a little smaller, as the cues get passed to the characters, but it should give you an idea.

What's the author's summary of the story?
In hindsight, maybe introducing the local werewolf contingent to the wonderful world of online gaming hadn't exactly been Stiles' best idea.

Director: the director of TMCNH (small role, 3 lines, 1 scene)

Erik Lehnsherr: leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants (lead role, 2 scenes)
Henry Gyrich: chair of the recently-formed Commission on Superhuman Affairs (medium role, 10 lines, 1 scene)

Details on how to audition! )

Any other information:

I am very open to improvisation on this script, and the script may end up with rewrites as we go.

All accents are welcome! I don't care if your native accent matches the characters' accents. Please use your most comfortable reading voice, and don't worry about accents at all.

Rehearsals will take place on Skype (my Skype username is helensfic). I will record rehearsals with MP3 Skype Recorder and will have copies available for all performers after we've recorded, in case we brainstorm ideas or you'd like to play back the rehearsals to see what your interactions with other performers sounded like.

The script is only 15 minutes or so, so we'll be running through it multiple times per rehearsal session. I marked out two hours as an approximate rehearsal time, but that actually may not be necessary -- we'll play it by ear.

For final recording, I'd ideally like each person to record eir own part individually, but I will have a Skype backup as a last-case option.

Sorry that it took us a while to make an official announcement about our new schedule! We had some behind-the-scenes work to do with directors to get ready for casting, and between the hurricane and life stuff, everything got pushed back a bit in the timeline to make sure we'd be able to do this right!

So here's the update: We've got 6 exciting projects in the works. They will post casting calls by tomorrow at the latest. As soon as casting call info is posted for a project, you may begin to submit auditions. Auditions for every project will stay open for 9 days—two weekends and the week in between. Once the first round of auditions close, directors may decide to hold callbacks to make final decisions, and then they will put up a casting list.

Here are answers to a couple of questions you may be having!

1. You are allowed to audition for as many roles, in as many productions, as you would like. Directors will privately communicate their casting lists to each other to make sure that no actor will be cast in more than one major role and one minor role across projects, so you don't need to worry about ending up with multiple major roles and being overwhelmed.

2. You will audition for a character by recording yourself performing the audition lines or sections that the director has chosen for that character. If this involves dialogue, you are welcome to get a second person to read opposite you, but you are also welcome to read both parts yourself and then note which of the two characters you're auditioning for.

If you have additional questions, please ask them in the comments. And keep an eye here for casting calls to be posted soon!

If you have a suggestion for a fic that you think would be particularly well-suited to become a TheatriPod project, please help our directors find it by suggesting it here!

(Obviously, author permission will need to be sought before the story is officially chosen, but this can inspire directors and potential directors and give them a starting place)
