dancinbutterfly: (MCR - Hero!Bob - No Bullshit)
[personal profile] dancinbutterfly posting in [community profile] theatripod
Hi, I’m Rachael [personal profile] dancinbutterfly and I’ll be looking for with 9 actors to be the POV characters (at a later date I will also be looking for at least 1 actor who would be willing to play the minor characters although more will be welcome)on a 50,000 word multi-voice Bandom podfic. Dont get intimidated! The number of people and the narrative distribution will allow for private time to work on your own and really spread out the word count.

What's the story?
You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison by me, [personal profile] dancinbutterfly, and is written third person limited omniscient point of view of 9 people inside a maximum security prison, along with other less central characters. The story is on LJ and here

What's the author's summary of the story? (characters will get a strike-through as assigned)
The Decaydence: that’s what the inmates call the D Block of Janick State Correctional Facility. The Decaydance is full of your garden variety mobsters, gangsters, pimps, drug dealers, crazy cult leaders, murderers, and other dangerous offenders. What people appear to be isn’t necessarily who they are but all that matters is reputation, how they stay alive and where they fall on the Decaydance food chain.

What's your summary of the story?
I AM the author so I’m going to leave it at that and talk about the tricky bits instead. This is a shifting POV story that I wrote a couple years ago and it deals with some heavy material - its set in prison so there’s violence, references to non-con, on screen consent issues, prison drug culture and other prison machinations. For me this is a story about how people come together and connect with each other in the most bizarre, horrible and beautiful ways. The main romantic pairings of this fic are Gerard/Brian, Pete/Patrick, and Bob/Ryan. I planned the first two and the third one snuck up on me and managed to rearrange the entire structure of the story which proved my own point. I also chose this one because there is no single narrator (all of the 9 main players narrator their own sections) and shifts it leaves room for us to wiggle around - if you the actor have issues with content, word order, etc, you can actually TALK TO ME about it and we can work on it.

How in the world is this going to work?
The fic lends itself to best to a combination of skype rehearsals/performances and individual recordings. Prior to actually rehearsal - availability through a webchat client would be good - to at least discuss plans for performance. Email discussions of this at least, I think, are necessary. I’d like to do the scene rehearsals over skype whenever possible(I'm dancincinbutterfly there as well), that may not be feasible. Rehearsals will be determined once we know the time-zones of everyone involved. I want to include everyone who wants to play so that could include several contents and lots of time zones so it will be based on which characters are assigned etc. Currently I’m not working and the job I’ll be starting is one where I can make my own schedule so I can take days off or be up late(EST)if needs be.

Major performances are going to be in small units. There is no over-all narrator character in this story so a large majority of the recording is going to be done independently. Readers will read their own parts and will come together for dialogue sections only - less like putting on a play and more filming a movie - breaking it down into parts. The size of groups is really reliant on the scenes themselves and the number and timing of rehearsals is really depend going on the peoples’ schedules but rather than force everyone into one set time - it will be to coordinate in a group by group basis (whoever get Bob and Ryan for example, will likely be working together and will be coordinating timingwise for example - the same for Gerard and Brian). This is supposed to be fun you guys - not a chore!

How do I audition?
Audition scripts are here on Dreamwidth in the order which the parts occur within the story. If you want to see them organized by their cut, just click my user icon :D

Character dialogue that is not the designated audition character is is bolded in the audition script. This is done to help you, the reader, to be clear. If it’s not one of the other eight main characters(for instance its a prison guard or fellow inmate who isnt on the cast list) please read the line. However if it is one of the other eight main characters, then you’re welcome to do what you like or makes you the most comfortable! If you’re auditioning for both characters? Go ahead and do both! You can include it in your reading, pause, say "line here" what have you. As I said it's really just there for you, the reader, to give the scene coherence. Break a leg and if you need anything email me! :D

If you’re interested in reading for one of the minor characters, please know that at this time I’m trying to get the 9 majors filled (because omg 9? I am in so far over my head) because this wont exist if I dont get those slots filled. However, you can audition with any of the existing excerpts for a minor role. I’ll be making a separate post for it after the first round of casting.

Where can I submit my audition?

Email an mp3 or m4a file or a link to a download of the file to ellidyay (at) gmail.com – I'll reply to let you know I've gotten it within 24 hours.
If I don't reply, message me at LJ or DW (dancinbutterfly).
Please say which character/characters you're auditioning for!
You're more than welcome to submit more than one audition (There are 9 characters. Please. Feel free to audition for as many as you feel comfortable with. You have my blessing)! Please limit your audition to material, though.

Other details

THIS FIC TAKES PLACE IN PRISON. There are warnings on the fic located at the LJ/AO3 link. If you dont want to head over there - there are descriptions and fall out of non-con and dub-con along with prison violence and mental manipulation. Obviously, that is something that might be a concern for you as an actor - with good reason. If you are interested in the project but reticent because of the warnings? Contact me. Please.

Part of the reason why I chose this fic is because I wanted to experiment with the collaboration process. As director I can help with the issues you might have as an actor regarding style or execution but as the writer, I can help with subject matter/content/execution. I wrote this fic over the course of exactly forty days starting in February of 2010. It’s been more than 2 years. I’ve changed a LOT as a writer since then and I am firmly of the belief that art needs to be able to change to live which is why I want to take the risk with this piece. I thought I did okay but there is some delicate stuff in here and I’ve always thought I could do better. Give me your input. I’m willing to work WITH YOU in regard to cuts/rewrites/making your part work within your abilities. In fact, I’m looking forward to that challenge - as strange as that sounds - because every experience I’ve ever had working with addressing podficcers’ with my fic has only made my work better.

So don’t let the warnings scare you too badly. Contact me! Lets talk about things. Maybe we can work it out. :D

Any and all accents are welcome! The nature of this particular story means that the only dialogue will be done in skype - internal monologues will be done on your own using whatever recording for that you like best! I don't care if your accent matches the character's accent – please use your comfortable reading voice. Final performance recordings may or may not be happening on skype, IDK how that’s going to work. Here’s hoping :D

  • Gerard Way (prisoner, a former drug addict, a good Catholic boy, a ghoul, the nicest guy on the D-Block, a tortured artist)
  • Frank Iero (prisoner, a Wise Guy, a savior of strays, a loyal boyfriend, the heir to the throne)
  • Brian Schechter (corrections officer, a runaway made good, a recovering alcoholic with old debts, a a man who wants something he knows he shouldn’t)
  • Gabe Saporta (prisoner, the prophet of the Cobra, a soothing shoulder to cry on, a coniving power-monger, a loving leader)
  • Pete Wentz (prisoner, an entrepreneur, a petty thug, a boy in love, a criminal mastermind)
  • Patrick Stumph (prisoner, the boy who fell down the rabbit whole, the new meat, a pretty face, a good man in hell)
  • William (prisoner, a professional who is worn out but not used up, an alliance to himself and his success, a man who knows where to stand when things are shifting)
  • Ryan Ross (prisoner, the D-block whore, a guy who took a fall for a friend, a man broken but not beaten, the unknowing lynch pin)
  • Bob Bryar (prisoner, a mob fixer, the friend at your six, a bloody death when it’s need, the lover who loves him enough not to try and stop him)
